Roller shuttles make weaving easier!

It takes effort to throw a traditional boat shuttle across a wide warp.  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

The Roller Shuttle

Weaving on a wide shed is a breeze!

It takes effort to throw a traditional boat shuttle across a wide warp. There is friction between the bottom of the shuttle and the warp ends so the motion might peter out before the shuttle gets to the other side. It's slow and it's tiring. But not with a roller shuttle! These beauties made by Glimakra are fitted with two wooden rollers on the bottom. The shuttle sails from one selvedge to the other with less effort and more speed than a traditional boat shuttle.

The Glimakra roller shuttles come in two sizes:  an 11.75" length that comes with a 4" quill and a 14.75" length that comes with a 6" quill. We've also used Schacht 4" and 6" plastic bobbins, as well as a Harrisville 4" wooden bobbin.

When do you use this type of shuttle? Narrow widths don't really need it but projects 24" or wider can benefit.  Try one now and see how much less tiring weaving a wide warp can be when you are using a roller shuttle!
